The Grocery coupons Game: Can It Save You Money?

It's an internet site that promises to save you money on your trip to the supermarket. The Grocery Game is a website that supplies insider sales information and coupons to major grocery stores across the United States -- but it carries a $10 membership fee for 8 weeks of using the website.

"It's a challenge to keep your cupboards full when you've got three teenagers," said Vicki Bond as she looked through her kitchen cupboards.

For Bond, feeding her family, and their friends, adds up: both in time, and in money.

She grocery shops once a week, each time spending an average of $100 and $125.

So Bond's the perfect candidate for The Grocery Game, an internet site advertising it can save you money in the supermarket, for a $10 membership fee you pay every 2 months.

It uses online coupons, which you print out and pair with something called Teri's List. Teri's list is a list of items the website's creator says will be on sale.

Combine those with your Sunday coupons, and the website claims families can save hundreds of dollars within weeks of signing up.

Armed with her list, Teri's list, and coupons, we sent Bond to play The Grocery Game.

There are two places in Central and Western Kansas The Grocery Game supplies savings for; one is Walgreens, the other is Dillons, where Vicki Bond is shopping.

When Bond brought in her bags, she has her normal bundles of groceries.

"I got a bunch of things I normally get," said Bond as she unloaded her purchases. "And the coupons seem to match things we just normally use on a regular basis."

The Grocery Game runs in 12 week cycles - so what's on sale this week may not be on sale until 3 months from now. So if you play, prepare to fill your pantry.

"The more you can stock up," explained Bond, "the more you can save with The Grocery Game, because a lot of it is geared towards just those non-perishables."

Bond's Grocery Game experience saved her about $25 for the week. "I can't complain about that," she said with a smile, "I'm not sure I could find anyone that would."

Her savings, she pointed out, would add up to $100 a month, and $1,200 hundred dollars a year, minus the $60 spent for membership.

"The savings; clearly, clearly the savings is worth the money and the time investment as well."

She recommended families at least try the grocery game once:

"They do all the hard work for you," said Bond, "and that's important when you're a mom, cause you're looking for every savings you possibly can. whether it be money or time, both are important."

And what you save in one place, she added, you can always spend somewhere else.

There are other issues with The Grocery Game. Ideally, said the website, your savings add up over the course of 3 months. The longer you play, and stockpile, the more money you save. It also costs $5 for each additional Teri's List you want, if you had multiple stores in your area you'd like to play.

But Bond also pointed out this works best with families, especially large families. Couples or single people probably wouldn't have a need for many of the coupons and savings offered.
